Many beginning photographers have no idea what type of camera lens they should buy with their new SLR Camera. That is completely understandable since there are so many different ones to choose from. Choosing the camera was difficult enough right? Well, there are several questions and aspects a photographer should think about before picking a particular lens.

The first question you need to ask your self is “What brand of Camera do I own?” This is probably an obvious question, but it’s critical to make sure that the lenses you are considering to purchase is compatible with your camera. Different lens brands use different lens mounts. This means that only a Sony lens can be used with a Sony camera, a Nikon lens with a Nikon camera, a canon lens with a canon camera, etc… However, it is important to note that there are third party companies that make lenses as well; just make sure that the third party lens was constructed for your specific brand and model of camera.

The second question you need to ask yourself is “What kind of pictures do I plan on taking?” Generally, the average photographer is going to mostly take portrait photos and perhaps some nature or landscape photos. However, if you are planning on shooting a nature documentary while on an African Safari, well then you will probably want a different type of lens than what is considered “typical”.

Essentially there are five different types of lenses and each type is ideal for certain scenarios. These lens types include:

• Extreme Wide Angle• Wide Angle• Standard• Telephoto• Super-Telephoto

These five different lenses are categorized mainly by their focal length. The focal length of a camera lens is distinguished by the lens’ angle of view. Thus, by altering the angle of view you control how much you’re magnifying the object in focus. Simply put, if your lens has a short focal length then you will have to physically be close to the subject. If your lens has a long focal length, you can zoom up close on the subject from far away.

The Extreme Wide Angle Lens has a focal length range of 0-21mm. This lens can capture very large images. It is typically used to capture shots that need to be very wide such as large architectural buildings.

The Wide Angle Lens has a focal length range of 21-28mm and is much like the Extreme Wide Angle Lens except that it is somewhat milder. This type of lens is comparable to what your eye would see when looking at an image. This type of lens is also excellent for taking broad shots. It is typically used to take pictures of landscape such as tall hills or mountains.

The Standard Lens has a focal length range of 35-85mm and is used for what a “typical” photographer would use a lens for. This type of lens has a wide focal range, being able to zoom in and out from objects well enough for most shots. This lens is generally considered an “all purpose” lens, just not quite as specialized. If you plan on shooting mostly portraits of people and landscape shots, this is the lens to get. Note: most photographers have a Standard Lens, which is generally recommended to be the first lens to purchase.

A Telephoto lens has a focal length range of 100-300mm which looks like a very long lens. This type of lens is used for taking close up images from a far distance away. These lenses are great for shooting details images from around 50 feet away. Generally a Telephoto lens is used for taking pictures of subjects in sports games. A Super-Telephoto Lens is a Telephoto lens on steroids with a focal length range of 300mm+. This type of lens is a professional grade lens and is quite expensive. It is able to capture detailed images from subjects at a very far distance. This type of lens is perfect for shooting pictures of wild life such as lions or panthers hunting. This lens allows the viewer to see the lion from very close up, while the photographer is physically much further away; which is an absolute must when dealing with dangerous situations. The aperture is also another very important feature when considering purchasing a lens. The aperture essentially allows you to control the amount of light that enters the shot. Each lens has a different aperture range. Note: the lower the aperture number, the more light you are allowing to enter. For example f/2.8 is going to have more light that f/16. Depending on what type of picture you want to take, you will want to have a lens compatible with a certain aperture setting. Do your homework and find out the aperture range of the lens before buying it.

If you follow those guidelines in determining the lens you want to purchase, you will find a lens that is perfect for your specific situation.

I had acquired the Canon EOS Rebel T3i from online store fourteen days ago. This specific Camera would be the advanced from my last standard point-and-shoot. The Camera is awesome so far. I used to be happy with the acquirement, and get forward to discovering better photography.

The Canon T3i is really helpful for those that with the first-time on DSLR. To be a beginner, I have much associated with this Camera. As soon as I learn one feature, it’s to the next exciting one. Takes gorgeous photographs. Just last overnight, I used a few top-class low-light photographs which are breathtaking for any newcomer like me, and shall lack been do-able which has a commonplace point-and-shoot.

I really like the swivel on your live view if doing video clips, which was another excuse to begin with this specific Camera over high types. You should use the live landscape to shoot stills as well, but I’m learning the hand features and also the viewfinder to get better acquainted with the Camera. Just an FYI, you will require an SDHC card which has a TV show 6 rating or over to complete video. You get a 16GB card on Amazon with just a lower price.

The sell lens appears to be excellent as I am very little making use of the Camera. I plan on changing the lens once I go along by it. Again, there are several healthy ideals on Amazon for Canon lenses (just search ‘Canon Lens’ and you will definitely get the preferred buys).

In closing, I tried many years to investigate and decide about whether or not getting into a DSLR appeared to be meaningful for me. Having now made order, I can see directly it had been worth the dollars. Especially for a novice like I was, the Canon T3i is a great Camera.

I got the camera as a birthday gift for my boyfriend who is in the Army and will be deploying soon. I have not used it but I love my very similar powershot which is why I chose this one. My only complaint is when I opened the box to take a look at it, the camera seems to be more of a greyish blue rather than dark grey. I still like the color and it is masculine but I wouldn’t really call it dark grey.

Canon SD1200ISTiny excellent camera with viewfinder and image stabilization. I first had a Canon 1000 which often got image blur and luckily I lost it and got the 1200 IS which takes much better pictures. In fact our family just purchased its third 1200IS. It would be hard to improve this camera. I load all my pictures with the SDcard. I could never get the Canon Software to load on either XP or Vista but you really do not need it. I highly recommend this camera. The pictures are excellent. James W Cook MD

Canon SD1200IS – Why Did They Have to Change the Darned Battery?I’ve had two SD1000s, an SD1100, and now this one. I liked the first two a lot, mostly for shooting outdoor nature shots in very bright light, but really liked the IS on the 1100 for shooting in dark canyons, etc. I find many more of my pix are good (not blurry at least).

But these cameras have problems with the lens gears

- just google “canon lens error”. I’ve had this on all my cameras (have not taken the Canon SD1200IS in the field yet). I use them outdoors in places with very fine sand, but I keep them clean and in bags, never drop them. Now the 1100 fell onto a rock from 6 feet so I take blame for that, but I’m really disappointed in the lack of robustness

- in fact part of the reason I have so many is that I won’t go out into the field without a spare. Note that if they die within the first year, Canon graciously repairs them under warranty, as long as they don’t look too beat up. And you often can get some more life out of them once the error starts by pushing the lens back so it is level

- but the gears are plastic, they are wearing out all the while, you can hear grating noises.

Nonetheless, I thought I have so many batteries and chargers why not stay with the family and I got the 1200. Sigh I was so disappointed that it has a different sized battery.

So I’ve just jumped over to the Lumix ZR-1 as my most recent camera. Canon lost me when they did that battery change trick, and I’m hoping that the Lumix will turn out to be more robust in the field.

Canon SD1200IS Is a Nice Camera If You Can Live With the Constant BuzzOrdered this from amazon.com.It was shipped via USPS by amazon. Packaging was not that great The camera LCD did not have a protective film. Everything was loosely packed just the strap had a tape. I was kinda scared if i got a refurb lemon.

Battery charged up fine in about an hour and half.Loaded up the battery & memory.

Now comes the irritating part.In the Auto mode this camera makes a irritating buzz.I read this in some other reviews too and was thinking i can live with it but the sound does really gets on your head.

Picture quality is really good.I have only tried it indoors and at night so far.I am going to try it outdoors and see how it fares. The camera looks very fragile and the components seem they will break easily.I hope it lasts atleast one year.
